Jimmy Van Heusen – Swingin’ with Frank & Bing, produced and directed by Jim Burns for PBS, tells the story of the remarkable life and music of the four-time Oscar-winning songwriter whose musical genius produced dozens of classics for the Great American Songbook. Van Heusen’s collaboration with entertainment greats Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra resulted in all-time hits such as Swinging on a Star, Love and Marriage, High Hopes, All The Way and My Kind of Town. The film features excerpts from the classic Hollywood films that debuted Jimmy Van Heusen’s timeless songs, with comments by major film and music figures including Frank Sinatra, Jr., Tony Bennett, Harry Crosby, Shirley MacLaine, Woody Allen and others.

The film will be followed by Jim Burns and Brook Babcock, Jimmy Van Heusen’s grandnephew, presenting a discussion and rarely seen photos from the 1950s and 60s, when Jimmy Van Heusen and Bing Crosby built side-by-side homes in the uninhabited desert that would become the thriving Palm Desert community of today. Other photos depict the Palm Springs of the Jet Set era when Jimmy Van Heusen’s piano bar in the old Desert Inn was a playground for Crosby, Frank Sinatra and other Hollywood pals including Dean Martin, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.

Cocktail hour will be from 6pm-7pm with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

Documentary screening will begin at 7pm followed by the Q&A.

All-time hits such as All the Way, Love and Marriage, Here’s That Rainy Day and My Kind of Town are featured as originally debuted on film by Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as by acclaimed vocalists Nick Ziobro and Julia Goodwin.

The unique film-with-symphony concert tells the story of the remarkable life and music of Jimmy Van Heusen, who test-piloted fighter planes while creating many of the most beloved melodies of the Great American Songbook. His longtime friendship and musical partnership with fellow Coachella Valley resident Frank Sinatra resulted in over 80 of his songs being recorded by Sinatra.

With a unique and dynamic command of the American Songbook’s golden age, Nick Ziobro has risen to the top of today’s singers under 35. Nick has appeared with the San Francisco Symphony, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, The Seattle Symphony and the Kennedy Center in Washington. His film credits include HBO’s Gilded Age, while his album A Lot of Livin’ to Do features appearances by legendary jazz performers Bucky Pizzarelli and Jay Leonhart.

Winning Michael Feinstein’s Great American Songbook Competition at 16 led to Julia Goodwin’s appearance on NBC TV’s America’s Got Talent, where she gained a large national following. Still in her 20s, her versatility as a jazz and popular singer has enabled her to connect with a wide range of audiences. She has appeared in New York at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Radio City Music Hall, at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, as well as with pops symphony orchestras across the country.
