Maurice Engleman - Director, Principal Violin

MauriceMaurice Engleman has played with the Symphony since its inception in 1993 and served on the CVS Board for almost as many years, including two terms as President.  He also serves on the CVS Scholarship committee.

Prior to his retirement to the CA desert, Mr. Engleman owned a chain of 7 Fashion Stores in Oregon and Washington for 11 years.  He also owned the first software company to create Personal Computer applications for the Life Insurance and Mutual Fund industries.

Artistic Abilities
Mr. Engleman’s music studies began at age four with the violin and he continues to perform both piano and violin. He has written numerous TV shows and musical reviews as well as film and television scores.

Maurice served on the Music Committee and was Annotator of the Oregon Symphony, served as President of the Portland Youth Philharmonic for 8 years, served as President of the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, Director of the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition and was Vice President of the Desert Youth Ballet.  He has also served on the boards of several Life Insurance and Investment Companies.

Education
Mr. Engleman has a BA in Music from the University of California (Berkeley) and studied composition with Roger Sessions, Ernest Bloch, Ernst Toch, and Darious Milhaud.

He has lived in Palm Springs for 23 years.
