Jason Powell

Jason Powell M.Mus., BME., Doctoral Candidate has been chosen as the new Conductor for our Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony!

Jason Powell is a local to the desert area having lived here for over twenty years. He is currently the Director of Strings at Palm Springs High School as well as the Assistant Band Director to Brian Ingelson (Director of Bands at Palm Springs High School).

Jason earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education in Classical Guitar with a minor in Percussion from the University of Redlands in 2007. From there he moved onto his Master's Degree remaining at Redlands in Guitar Performance before moving to Boston University where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Music Education.  Most currently, Mr. Powell is working towards his Doctorate degree in Educational Justice and Leadership.  In addition to all of these studies, Jason has also completed graduate course work at Florida State, Ohio State, and Chapman University, as well as, specialty studies in Kodaly Methods. 

Jason spent four years as the Music Director at the Church of the Lighted Cross as well as the Worship Leader at Church of Morongo for four years, and is currently an active musician at Our Savior's Church in Palm Springs. Jason has provided private lessons and recording time in his studio to the desert for the past ten years. He has arranged numerous guitar, strings, and percussion pieces, performed in many country clubs throughout the Coachella Valley, and been involved in many established ensembles including the Joshua Tree Phil Harmonic. Jason is an established musician throughout the desert having directed many local ensembles including the Palm Springs Community Orchestra and the Desert Guitar Ensemble. He has been a guest clinician at many local music establishments, including College of the Desert. Jason has also been a guest adjudicator for the Desert Music Foundation Instrumental Scholarships. 

Jason Powell is currently teaching Beginning Orchestral Strings, Symphonic Orchestra, Class Guitar I - IV, Classical Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Drum Line, and various String Quartets at Palm Springs High School. He also assists with the Marching Band, Pit Orchestra, Concert Band, and the elementary "Music is Instrumental" program at Palm Springs High School. In addition to this, Mr. Powell is also the violin and strings teacher for the Desert Music Foundation Community Strings School in Joshua tree. In past years, he has taught at the Backstreet Performing Arts Studios in Riverside California as well as summer Music classes For the Coachella Valley High School, Las Palmitas Elementary, and Palm View Elementary. He can be heard in Cd’s such as the Riverside Community College’s “Southern California Portraits” and the Palm Springs High School’s musicals: The Phantom of the Opera, and Beauty and the Beast.
