Gerald E. Napier - Director

Gerald_NapierGerald Napier has served as a Director on the CVS Board for many terms.  He is also Chairman of the Endowment Committee.

Mr. Napier is the Retired President of I. Magnin and Company, San Francisco. He was named President in February 1982 and retired in 1988, when the company was sold by Federated Department Stores to the R. H. Macy Company. With the exception of merchandising and sales promotion, he was responsible for all functions of the company including management of its 26 stores.

Prior to being promoted and transferred to I. Magnin, he was for five years Senior Vice President for General Operations of Abraham and Straus, a Federated department store headquartered in Brooklyn, New York. His responsibilities included warehousing and distribution, transportation, store operations, data processing, all central work-room functions, engineering, construction, maintenance, and purchasing.

The Kentucky native began his career with Federated in 1966 at the Corporate Headquarters in Cincinnati. In 1971 he was appointed Operating Vice President for Operations Services. He was elected Corporate Vice President in 1973 with responsibility for a variety of corporate staff functions serving as internal consultants to all Federated divisions.

Before joining Federated, Napier spent nine years in Cincinnati as Director of Industrial Engineering with the Kroger Company, the nation’s largest supermarket chain.

Awards/Achievements
He was the recipient of the 1986 Mercantile Industry Good Scout Award from the San Francisco Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  In 2010 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree, Doctor of Laws, LLD, by Dominican University of California.

Other Posts
Mr. Napier has held many leadership positions in numerous professional, business and civic organizations. He is a past Director of the National Retail Merchants Association, the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, Marshall Hale Memorial Hospital, the Downtown Association of San Francisco, the Uptown Parking Association, the Salvation Army and the California Retailers Association. He is a Director Emeritus of the San Francisco Ballet Association and a Trustee Emeritus and past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dominican University of California at San Rafael.

Education
Mr. Napier holds an MBA from the University of Louisville and Bachelors Degree in Industrial Administration from the University of Kentucky.

Personal
Mr. Napier lives in Palm Desert with his wife, Martha, of 64 years.  They have three children and four grandchildren.
