Dorothy Morden – CVS Concertmaster, Music Librarian, Beginning Strings Conservatory Teacher

Dorothy_Morden2From the earliest childhood, music was an integral part of Dorothy Morden’s life. Her pianist mother said that when Dorothy was a toddler, she was very curious about the sounds of the piano, and made up little tunes. Her formative violin studies began at age 8 with Dr. Schin’ichi Suzuki, a prominent teacher at the University of Tokyo, Japan, where she lived until her family immigrated to the USA when she was a young teenager. But soon afterward, the family moved to Canada where, coached by the distinguished violinist Howard Leighton-Brown, she earned her specialized degrees, AMUS and ARCT in violin performance and teaching from the Universities of Saskatchewan and Toronto.

Her violin teaching career began at age 16, but while attending University, she specialized as an elementary school teacher, thereby combining both of her careers successfully while being the mom of three sons and one daughter. Currently she is a full time primary teacher at Marywood-Palm Valley School in Rancho Mirage, and is busily working before and after school hours teaching students how to play their instruments.

Seven years ago, Dorothy became one of the teachers in the CVS program. Many of her students are now playing in the Buddy Rogers Youth Symphony, and others have graduated to the adult symphony. She believes that though the process is demanding, it gives great joy and pleasure to be involved in the lives and training of young people.

Dorothy and her husband, Roy, have been active in the musical life of Coachella Valley since moving to California in 1988. Both are members of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), and the Music Teachers’ National Association (MTNA). Dorothy is the concertmaster of the Coachella Valley Symphony, and is wholeheartedly supported by her husband, Roy, who stepped in as Treasurer and Coordinator of the Beginning Strings Conservatory. For the past two years, both have spent untold hours working in the Library of the Symphony, to provide and care for the music that is in our concert programs for your enjoyment.
